Gold and Chrome Plating: Look Beyond the Shine
When choosing a Sam Browne, it’s easy to focus on the leather and the colour of the fittings. But the quality of the plating deserves just as much attention. A bright finish on day one doesn’t tell you how well it will stand up to use.
Some budget gold-plated fittings achieve their appearance with a very thin layer of gold. They may look impressive when new, but that finish can wear through quickly, particularly in areas exposed to regular handling and friction.
Before buying, ask a simple question: how thick is the gold plating?
Quality Is More Than Colour
At Douglas Leather, we have our plating carried out by a well-known Brisbane plater who takes pride in their work.
Our gold-plating options include 1, 2 and 4 microns, with the price reflecting the thickness selected. A micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre, so these are precise layers of precious metal—not simply different shades of gold.
Greater thickness provides more gold to withstand wear, although care, handling and use still affect the life of any plated finish. Quality plating costs more, and we believe customers should understand what they’re paying for.
Whether you prefer gold or chrome, look beyond the initial shine. Ask who carries out the plating, what finish is being supplied and how to care for it.
Removable Fittings Make a Difference
Our Sam Browne fittings are removable, allowing you to take them off before polishing and caring for the leather.
That means you can work on your belt without rubbing leather polish, cleaning products or polishing cloths over the plated pieces. It’s a practical detail that helps prevent unnecessary exposure and abrasion, particularly with gold finishes.
A quality Sam Browne is an investment. Choose fittings with the same care you give the leather—and don’t let a budget price hide a finish that won’t last.
